چکیده

We present submillimeter polarimetric observations of the Giant Molecular Cloud (GMC) NGC 6334, obtained using the Hertz instrument at the Caltech Submillimeter Observatory on Mauna Kea. We obtain constraints on GMC magnetic fields by interpreting these Hertz data together with (a) previously published larger-scale submillimeter polarization maps of the GMCs NGC 6334 and G333.6-0.2 obtained using the SPARO instrument at South Pole, and (b) simulated GMC polarization maps from published magnetohydrodynamic turbulence simulations. The agreement between observations and simulations is good only when the ratio RF :U of fluctuating to uniform field amplitudes lies in the range 0.6 < RF :U < 2.0, and when the ratio RT :K of total magnetic energy (including both uniform and fluctuating components) to turbulent kinetic energy lies in the range 0.9 < RT :K < 1.8. We also compare our results with those obtained by other investigators. Subject headings: ISM: magnetic fields — stars: formation — submillimeter — polarization

Dispersion of Observed Position Angles of Submillimeter Polarization in Molecular Clouds

One can estimate the characteristic magnetic field strength in GMCs by comparing submillimeter polarimetric observations of these sources with simulated polarization maps developed using a range of different values for the assumed field strength. The point of comparison is the degree of order in the distribution of polarization position angles. In a recent paper by H. Li and collaborators, such...

Magnetic Fields in Star-Forming Molecular Clouds. V. Submillimeter Polarization of the Barnard 1 Dark Cloud

We present 850 μm polarimetry from the James Clerk Maxwell Telescope toward several dense cores within the dark cloud Barnard 1 in Perseus. Significant polarized emission is detected from across the mapped area and is not confined to the locations of bright cores. This indicates the presence of aligned grains and hence a component of the magnetic field in the plane of the sky. Polarization vect...

Grain Alignment by Radiation in Dark Clouds and Cores

We study alignment of grains by radiative torques. We found a steep rise in radiative torque efficiency as grain size increases. This allows the larger grains that are known to exist within molecular clouds to be aligned by the attenuated and reddened interstellar radiation field. In particular, we found that, even deep inside giant molecular clouds, e.g., at optical depths corresponding to AV ...

Magnetic Fields and the Triaxiality of Molecular Cloud Cores

We make the hypothesis that molecular cloud fragments are triaxial bodies with a large scale magnetic field oriented along the short axis. While consistent with theoretical expectations, this idea is supported by magnetic field strength data, which show strong evidence for flattening along the direction of the mean magnetic field. It is also consistent with early submillimeter polarization data...

Magnetic Fields in Star-Forming Molecular Clouds I. The First Polarimetry of OMC-3 in Orion A

The first polarimetric images of the OMC-3 region of the Orion A filamentary molecular cloud are presented. Using the new imaging polarimeter on SCUBA at the James Clerk Maxwell Telescope, we have detected polarized thermal emission at 850 μm from dust along a 6 length of the dense filament. The polarization pattern is highly ordered and is aligned with the long axis of the filament throughout ...
